WHAT DO
DIFFERENT TYPES OF AMBER MEAN? |
|
RAW AMBER refers to chunks of amber that have been cut and
shaped into beads. They may be polished or unpolished, clear or
opaque, and often may contain soil or other inclusions. Also
referred as rock amber. Royal Amber refers to very high quality
beads of buttery yellow color.
PRESSED AMBER
refers to smaller
amber pieces that have been heated and pressed into shape. They are of
equal quality, but more uniform in color and shape, and much more
durable for komboloi flipping.
MISTEKA (Masticha, Mastic) and FATURAN AMBER refers to
manufactured amber, made of amber shavings, resin and dyes. It often
contains frankincense or other fragrances. Its value increases the
oldest the beads are (i.e. late 19th-early 20th cent.)
